TRIP IDEAS

Coastal & Karst

A compact coastline of Venetian-style towns meets limestone country just a few minutes inland.

A compact coastline of Venetian-style towns meets limestone country just a few minutes inland. On the shore you’ll find bell towers, stone lanes, and promenades with ladders into the sea and over the first hills you’ll discover cave systems, salt pans, vineyards and small villages built in pale stone. Distances between different destinations are short, so you can plan neat trips that include two or three places without any need to rush.

Climb a tower for a fast panorama, join a guided cave walk at set times, and stop for seafood or a tasting of local Teran and pršut. In summer, sun and glare can be strong on cliff paths and salt-pan causeways, so hats and water make the day easier or even just a jump into the sea. Parking near historic centers is usually controlled - follow signs to the main lots.
